Cambrian Greenstone Heathcote Shiraz 2019
95/100 Sam Kim
'Offering terrific fruit purity and richness, the wine shows black and purple fruit flavours with floral, hazelnut, clove and vanilla notes on the nose. It is wonderfully concentrated and weighted on the palate, displaying plump mouthfeel and fleshy texture, finishing impressively long and silky. At its best: 2021 to 2034.'
The Heathcote region is known for it's Cambrian Greenstone. These calcium-rich (confusingly) red soils are prized for their water retention capabilities. While they drain freely, enough water is held in the soil to feed the vine throughout the growing season, without irrigation. The result is small berries of intensity and power.
From one of the most exclusive vineyard locations within the Heathcote region, the inaugural release of the Black Label Shiraz is a powerful, structured and intense expression of this regions best variety. Dry grown and hand picked in the cool of night, the fruit is treated to gentle pumpovers and maceration, long soaking period for colour and tannin structure and an extensive time in the finest French and American oak barriques.
