The Apollonian McLaren Vale Shiraz 2019
94/100 Halliday Wine Companion
An even split of whole bunches and destemmed fruit. 12 days maceration. Half sent to French wood for 20 months. A deep, glossy ruby. Aromas of lilac, wakame, blueberry and barbecued ribs. A sachet of clove and pepper meets the juicy line of acidity, more pertinent to the wine's structure – with this grape in these parts – than the smooth patina of grape tannin and oak. A slick wine. But not a patch on the eponymous cab. Cellar to 2030.
95/100 The Real Review
Deep, intense purple hue. The nose gives up blue fruits, some mocha and dry earth notes. Very concentrated and powerful. Great length, and whilst there's such intense fruit it is tempered by judicious oak spice and well-framed tannins. Even being so young it's already complete but will reward further cellaring. to 2036
92/100 The Wine Front
McLaren Vale Shiraz. Blewitt Springs. 50% new French oak. Full-bodied style with both blue and black berried fruit flavours swooping through the palate, aided considerably by toasty/coffeed/malty oak. Grainy tannin comes fully integrated with the flow of flavour. Black straps of licorice-like flavours come forward as the wine breathes. It’s unsubtle but it’s convincing.
96/100 Wine Orbit
Power and refinement in one, this delectably styled shiraz shows blackberry, dark cocoa, cedar, cake spice and floral notes on the nose, followed by a sumptuous palate delivering velvety texture and plush tannins. Mouthfilling and hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2036.
From Australia's most distinguished vineyards and winemakers.
The Apollonian theory of Greek mythology entwines two seemingly opposite philosophical elements of the gods and brothers Apollo and Dionysus to create a complete and complex entity. Order and chaos, purity and excess, harmony and passion. Entwined by nature they are at their best when together. The vineyard, the winemaker, the vintage and the moment create the experience.
