94 points/5 stars. Sam Kim-Wine Orbit.
It is intensely aromatic on the nose showing passion fruit, rockmelon, currant and lime peel characters on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate that is punchy and delicious. The wine offers terrific fruit purity and vibrancy, finishing persistent and mouth-watering. At its best: now to 2001.
Awatere Valley is one of three sub-regions within the famous Marlborough wine region of New Zealand, it lies south-east of the region's other main wine-growing areas, the Wairau Valley. Herbaceous white wines made from Sauvignon Blancs are a particular specialty of the region. This Sauvignon Blanc is made from two select vineyards in the southern Awatere Valley. It has juicy tropical and gooseberry flavours with notes of melon, grapefruit and passionfruit, and fresh, balanced acidity.
The Awatere River, gives the region its name – awatere meaning "fast-flowing river" in the local Maori dialect. The vineyards of the Awatere Valley sit on dry, free-draining soils and are one of the most important features of the terrior in Awatere because they stress the vines. Stressed vines grow deep root systems in search of water and nutrients and produce high-quality berries to ensure the propagation of their species.
